Kellan's transition to Jolon's room

Jan and I have been talking about moving Kellan out of our bed and into Jolon's room, thinking we really should give it a go before the new baby arrives. However, we've all been sleeping so well lately, that I wasn't too keen to change anything. (Most nights I've been taking Kellan to bed and staying with him until he falls asleep, which is usually within 15 minutes. Then he's out solid from 8:30/9:00 until 7:00.) I forget why we finally did it the other night. Maybe we suggested it to him and he didn't object too strongly. Anyway, we put the two little futons down side by side. Kellan went to sleep first at 8:30 and was out by 9:00 when Jan brought Jolon in. The first night he only woke up once and when he came looking for us, I went out and put him back down and he stayed the rest of the night. This week he's been waking up 2 or 3 times a night and one of us will go and put him back to sleep which sometimes takes 5 minutes, sometimes longer, and I have fallen asleep in there on the floor which is not much fun as big as I am. The funny thing is that we've both tried to put him back in our bed in the middle of the night when it's just easier to do that than have to get up and take him back to the tatami room. But no matter what time of night he wakes up, he always says, "tatami." He seems to have no interest in going to back to our bed. I can't believe it. If we can just get him to get better at waking up in there and putting himself back to sleep, we might be fine.

When Kellan is saying "yon sai," he means 4 years old.  When I say, "Nan gumi desu ka?" I'm asking them which class they're in this year.

Jolon dancing; Kellan swinging

Field trip

The boys each walked to different parks last week and had lunch outside. So, I got up at 5:30 in order to make their bentos. Grilled pumpkin, zucchini, and a boiled carrot. Corn grilled with butter. A fried shrimp (bought) and a Chinese dumpling (bought), avocado and cherry tomato for Jolon, scrambled egg, cheese on steamed broccoli, grilled salmon and rice balls. We usually get some feedback from the teachers as to how it looks and if the kids ate everything. Jolon ate everything, but Kellan couldn't finish his, so their advice was to pack a bit less next time. Sounds good to me.

New responsibilities in the Blue Sky class

One of the big changes for Jolon this year is the pre-lunch routine. This year the kids have to do more than just carry the dishes to the tables as they've been doing for the past 2 years. Now if it's your group's turn to be in charge of lunch, you have to don an apron and a hat and divide the rice, the salads, and the soup into all 22 individual bowls and plates. After things are divided equally, then they'll serve the rest of the class. Every so often an apron and hat come home for us to wash and then return to school the next day.

Baby Kellan and new brother, Jolon, video

The first clip is from Apr. 3rd, 07, so Jolon is about 2 years and 4 months and Kellan is just over 2 months old.  The next one Jolon is 2 and half and Kellan is right at 4 months old.  I really wanted to find some footage of Jolon at about the same age as Kellan is now to compare.

In the second clip I'm asking Jolon about which kids are in which hans (small groups).  It's especially funny to us because this is the exact question we ask Kellan all the time these days.

Tomorrow I'll put up a few recent clips of Kellan for comparison.

Kellan's second birthday

We celebrated Kellan turning 2 again in Feb. while we were visiting in TN.  Aunt Gail made a fabulous airplane cake and all the cousins came down for the party.  You can really see the excitement in his eyes as the cake is being presented.

Kagura from Oct. 2008

We went to a lot of Kagura performances last fall and Jolon, especially, really enjoyed them.  Here we tried to reenact a performance in our living room.  Jan is the snake and Jolon is the samurai figure who defeats him.
